SATURDAY 05 JUNE

20.30 VERSIFYING (documentary film)
2009, Brazil, 53min. Directed by Pedro Caldas.
The film makes a trip throughout the origins, the forms and the meaning of free style verses and lyric improvisation in the Brazilian musical culture. The track takes place in the vast and diverse metropolis of Sao Paulo, going from the oldest to the newborn improvisation styles.

20.30 CARTOLA: THE SAMBA LEGEND (documentary film) 2006, Brazil, 85min. Directed by Lírio Ferreira, Hilton Lacerda.
This soulful documentary tells the life and times of Cartola (Agenor Oliveira), singer, poet and one of the most important Brazilian composers. Cartola was a gifted man, who despite having had little formal education wrote samba masterpieces. The film uses his history to design a panel of the Brazilian cultural memory, searching for the roots of samba.

22.00 RODA DE SAMBA (jam session with Brazilian beats) Directed by Nelson Latif (acoustic guitar and cavaquinho), with Marcelo Godoy (vocals and acoustic guitar), Brancka (vocals), Caroline Lobanov (vocals), Alaor Soares (percussion) and special guests.

In a Roda de Samba, musicians and singers gather in a circle around a table to play samba songs. They combine personal and collective flair. In this open space, singers challenge each other, talent turns into legend, composers try out new creations and the Brazilian music renews itself.

SATURDAY 26 JUNE

20.30 THE MAN WHO BOTTLED CLOUDS (documentary film)
2008, Brazil, 106min. Directed by Lírio Ferreira.

Humberto Teixeira was a lawyer and composer, who together with Luiz Gonzaga was involved in the birth of the baião, a movement in Brazilian music in the 1940s and 1950s, later shadowed by samba and bossa nova. His daughter, actress Denise Dummont, collaborated with filmmaker Lirio Ferreira to examine the history of the baião and to pay a tribute to Teixeira.

22.00 RODA DE FORRÓ & BAIÃO (jam session with Brazilian beats) Directed by Nelson Latif (7 strings guitar and cavaquinho), with Ceumar (vocals), Alaor Soares (drums), Grupo Zabumba and special guests.

While in Brazil, most of the country is enjoying the “Festas Juninas”, a massive celebration in homage to Saint Anthony, Saint John and Saint Peter, the Roda exults the traditional rhythms from the Northeast of Brazil: the Forró and the Baião. Once regional and backwards, Forró and Baião are nowadays experiencing an incredible revival, being amongst the most popular Brazilian dance rhythms.

FRIDAY 02 JULY

20.30 PALAVRA (EN)CANTADA (documentary film)
2008, Brazil. 85 min. Directed by Helena Solberg.
The documentary travels in the history of the Brazilian chanson, with a special glance at the relationship between music and poetry. From the street carnival to the poets of the favelas, from Bossa Nova to Tropicalismo, Palavra (En)cantada moves through the early Brazilian songs to the music of nowadays.
 
22.30 LUIZ MELODIA (concert)
Luis Melodia represents the power of pop samba from Rio de Janeiro. His musical blend and delightful lyrics are classics of the Brazilian music of all times. He is a master of the lyrics, and his vocal precision and luminosity ratifies that he is also an interpreter of many talents and tinges, belonging to the nobility of the popular Brazilian music.

20.30 BEYOND IPANEMA (film documentary)
2009, Brazil/USA, 80min. Directied by Guto Barra, Becó Dranoff.
Beyond Ipanema is a mash-up of thoughts and ideas about the repeating cycle of discovery of Brazilian music in the world. Artists, producers, DJs and critics analyze how the crosspollination of music styles, as well as sampling and globalization have helped Brazil to secure a unique position in global culture.
 
22.30 MOINHO
Emmanuele Araujo (vocals), Lan Lan (percussion and vocals), Tony Costa (guitar and vocals) and Pedro Mazillo (bass).
Moinho band rescues old sambas from the most important matrixes: Bahia and Rio. However, Moinho goes beyond, making a revival of the Tropicalia movement by bringing together Dorival Caymmi, Cartola and Novos Baianos, mixing electric guitar with acoustic sounds, and performing a new encounter of the music from Bahia and Rio de Janeiro.
